Two Crocheted Coffee Sleeve Patterns

IMG_0867

I taught myself to crochet using you tube videos about two months ago and over the last month I have really started going crochet crazy. Ready to join me?? I hope so. I wanted a pattern just like the ones below, but wasn't able to find it anywhere-so I made up my own. I am sure they are imperfect, if you find a problem do let me know, or if you don't too!!

Both patterns are extremely similar, but because I made them both I figured I'd share them.

Warm Hands Coffee Sleeve Pattern

I call this one warm hands because the tipple crochet stitch will allow heat to seep through while still giving the holder of the cup enough of a barrier from that insanely hot yummy beverage they are about to consume. Can be flipped to display buttons either way (for righty or lefty), just turn sleeve upside down or right side up.

IMG_0862I used Impeccable from Loops and Threads Impeccable- it is a worsted weight (4 Medium) with a size H/5.0mm crochet hook.

Chain 29
Turn
DC in each of the 29 chained stitches to end of row
Turn
TC the 29 stitches to end of row
Turn
SC all stitches to end of row
Turn
TC all stitches to end of row
Turn
DC whole row to end
Tie and weave in ends, finished work should measure about 11 inches long and 3 inches high.  Add buttons to one side of the strip so you can button it to the other end and make a cuff.

Enjoy that drink without burning your hands and while saving a tree- or a branch! HA!

(Because I did make this pattern up, there could be problems with the abbreviations, however I am pretty sure it is right. If you try it and have any problem let me know!)

Not Too Toasty Coffee Sleeve Pattern

To be sure and keep your hands away from the hot, hot, HOT drink in a portable cup (mine is ceramic, although it appears paper) snap up your crochet hook and within no time you'll have a coffee sleeve you can use over and over- and it is way cuter than cardboard! Can be flipped to display buttons either way (for righty or lefty), just turn sleeve upside down or right side up.

I used Impeccable from Loops and Threads Impeccable- it is a worsted weight (4 Medium) with a size H/5.0mm crochet hook.

Tie ends and weave in yarn. Finished work should measure about 11 inches long and 3 inches high.  Add buttons to one side of the strip so you can button it to the other end and make a cuff.

Oh, don't forget the buttons. I did three, you do as many as you like!

A Handmade Christmas: I will keep posting ideas for a non-tacky handmade christmas. This is the first so far, I am a little slower this year as my babybelly is making me tired. I will still try and get quite a few ideas up before Christmas that you can make for family and friends I will re-post from the years gone by as well.

I’ve Knit, Crocheted and Sewn Myself Crazy!

IMG_0931

I could almost say life is on hold right now as I knit, crochet and sew so much that my fingers are even working as I fall asleep each night. Right now, year after year, is when I say to myself, " I should have started so much earlier". Then I breath deep and make promises to myself that I wont keep next year either. Its okay- I am used to myself.

Anyway there is much going on- hats in all shapes and sizes, wash clothes, stuffed sock monkeys, coffee sleeves, fingerless gloves, scarves, bags, and hopefully Christmas pj's that are all coming to life as my fingers craft them up in my little workshop. Want to know what is shouted in our house the most during the day, " don't come back here I am working on stuff you can't see yet!!!!!!".

I love each day of it, and when the gush of gifts is done I will probably walk around my home in circles confused as to what to do when not keeping my hands-a-knitting 200 miles per hour. That day will come and then I will do what I do best: sit down with a cup 'o tea and sip it slowly.

Until then I will be back between now and then making sure to give you the patterns I am working on, but please let me know what you are working on too- I'd LOVE new ideas!!!

Jesse Tree for Advent

Jesse Tree Ornament Tin

As Christians, Christmas should be a huge celebration. Not in the commercial way of buying as many presents as we can for as many as we can...but in meaningful celebrations with our families and in our hearts. Our joy at celebrating Christ's birth should be infectious. I love this season, I start listening to Christmas music in early November- and most of the time I can't quit until late January. It is a time meant for families to gather around and share of the most amazing miracle of all time: when God come to earth in the form of a baby- a human. God stripped Himself of all his power to be like us, thus tipping the scale in our favour. Without this amazing birth, we would still be lost, still offering the sacrifices of animals that could never cover our sins.

The meaning of Jesse Tree is from the verses in the bible in 1 Samuel 16:1-13 and then Isaiah 11:1-10. The following section of the verse speaks of the Christ coming to the world by way of Jesse, and his descendants- thus the "Tree of Jesse".

1 There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse,

And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.

2 The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him,

The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,

The Spirit of counsel and might,

The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.

3 His delight is in the fear of the LORD,

And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes,

Nor decide by the hearing of His ears;

4 But with righteousness He shall judge the poor,

And decide with equity for the meek of the earth;

He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth,

And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked.

5 Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins,

And faithfulness the belt of His waist.

10 “ And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse,

Who shall stand as a banner to the people;

For the Gentiles shall seek Him,

And His resting place shall be glorious.” -Isaiah 11:1-5 +10

Return and Rebuilding (Neh 1:1-2:8, 6:15-16, 13:10-22)

The Jesse Tree is intended to guide you through the 29 days that lead up to Christmas as a journey towards a deeper understanding of all that took place leading up to the birth of Christ through the Old Testament and then into the beginning of the New Testament. Each evening before bed we do the scripture reading for that day and then the boys take turns getting to hang the specified ornament on the tree. They beg for it to be "time for the Jesse Tree" and love it when it is their turn to hang the ornament. We did it last year for the first time and I learned so much. It deepens my faith in Christ each time. Going through the scripture of all the ancestors that lead up to Christ and seeing all the prophesies fulfilled to the letter really build our faith. We look forward to doing it every year as a tradition of the true meaning of Christmas with our family.

Just so you know, this is our third year with the Jesse Tree tradition, and I still have 5 ornaments left to make! Be easy on yourself, the ornaments are great for the kids and to remember- but not mandatory for a good devotional time with the family around the tree. I did some the first year, another bunch of ornaments the second year.

What Christmas traditions are you doing with your family? Did your family do any with you when you were young that you are continuing?

I published much of this post last year 7th December 2009. I took some edits to it and did a little re-pub to get all our minds working  for the Advent season ahead.

Year-Round Felt True Love Ornaments

IMG_7669

These bright heart-shaped ornaments are not just to bring out at Christmas, but to be admired all year long.  I made them because they reminded me of the of the retro embroidered hearts from the seventies or sixties. They aren't difficult to make, some simple embroidery and felt cutting is pretty much it. I did the blanket stitch around the edges and then just other fun stuff on the hearts themselves.

To make these you will need: wool felt, embroidery thread and poly-fill stuffing to pooch them out, and a button for each. They could be made in natural colours too if that is more pleasing to you.

The thing that I really enjoy about felt is that it is a lazy woman's fabric since there is no fraying, washing, ironing or hemming needed. I am guessing that that is why it has become extremely popular as of late. It is beautiful and takes less work- what could be the catch!?

I can't seem to stop cutting these little delights out and sewing them for family! It is like doodling to me to mess with them and do the stitches.

Valentine's Day is coming up, these would be perfect for Valentine's Day or Christmas for that special someone.  Personally, I think that these are pretty enough to stay out year round! Enjoy.

Easy ‘Stained Glass’ Kid’s Craft

IMG_7635

This is such a fun idea that kids can do easily. We made them for grandparents as gifts, but now I want them to make me one too so I can have it in my window. All you need for this homemade kids craft is a frame (try thrift stores, they have tons!), some Wacky Glue (or other glue that is strong enough and dries clear) and some of these glass pebbles or whatever they are called.

I picked the colours at the craft store and then just dumped them out on the table after putting glue all over the glass and let the boys work away. This was a great craft for them! Both boys loved it so it works for kids age 3 to 5 for sure :) Enjoy the process and then gift or keep, but be sure to set it in a sunny window to get the full effect.

Knit Granny Washcloth (or Dishcloth) Pattern

My grandma, taught me to make these several times when I was growing up. She is gone now, and I forgot how to make them. But now that I have re-taught myself to knit I really wanted to figure these out again. I did!  It is exactly the pattern she taught me, at least it turns out the same. There are probably several ways to do this.

I use Cotton Ease Lion Brand yarn, a medium 4 which is 50% Cotton, 50% Acrylic. I don't think it matters what you use as long as it is cotton. I think I have busted out 5 of these so far, they feel so nice on the skin as a washcloth. And I knit different ones for the dishes as well, that way I can just throw them in the wash.

Granny Dishcloth/Washcloth Knitting Pattern:

*CO 4

*K4 rows (4 rows of the 4 you CO)

*K2, YO1, K remainder of stitches (the YO will add one stitch each row)
repeat for every row until you have 44 stitches on your needle.

*K1, Ktog, YO1, Ktog, knit remainder of row
repeat until you are down to 4 stitches on your needle, then cast off.

enjoy your bath! (or washing your dishes in style)

Knitting Terms:
CO: Cast On
K: Knit (along with number of stitches)
YO: Yarn Over
Ktog: Knit Together

This pattern was first posted on my blog on January 10th 2009. Since last year I have made so many of these, and I love making them because they are brainless, which I can do while I listen to an audiobook or watch a movie.  I personally love the one that I kept more than any of my store bought ones. It is really good at getting all the grime off and I love how it exfoliates my skin without being abrasive. I have promised to knit myself some more and put them in MY stocking this year!! I highly recommend knitting some of these and if none of your family wants then, really then you will have lucked out!
