Sweet Holiday Memories

There are many special moments that were easy to enjoy with family and friends during this season. I hope you too had a dose of sweet memories. Jokes that still bring the ring of laughter to my ears, bonds that are deeper after our time together- I love that we could take a break and just enjoy eachother.

The Mistake We Make of Christmas: Our Not-So-Holy Holiday

I have been wanting to write this post for a while, but it is hard to put these thoughts into words. Christmas is a celebration, a holy day to worship, it is not my birthday, and it isn't yours. It is nice to be with family, but Christmas isn't about family either, it is about celebrating the amazing miracle of the birth of the Christ child and what that means for us. That is my gift, that I am redeemed, that I am forgiven, because I took that gift 27 years ago right from the fingertips of Jesus.

Why then are we not content? I think it is because we never stop to evaluate our expectations. We never ask that of our kids either. We don't want to ruin their dreams. Only when they get older will they see right through the fickle Christmas that you built up for them, when they already have several 'Christmas tradition'  immersed brats of their own. That can change though. I want to change it now.

Let's fill our houses with the desire and anticipation of Jesus and not of wish lists, because He is the only one who will make us complete. We are not filled by lugging home 5 Christmas trees, one for each room of the house, each with its own theme. Giving presents doesn't even make us feel much better when we can see the getter of our gifts already has opened 10 toys in a row and can barely be grateful enough to muster up a smile. Giving should be done for those who need it. Pray about that.

I've felt challenged in this season more than any other to give  to those who don't have- which is not my own children, my family, or those around me. We are blessed in this country, and when we look around some of us don't even see any need to give at all. I would challenge you to pray about your gift giving, the amount you are to spend on family and then to put aside money to give, or to buy something for a local food bank or one of the many charities who give practical gifts around the world (I'll provide a list below). Let's get out of our little bubble- the world awaits. There is no better season than this one, where in the name of Christ we don't say, but we do, we need to learn to be like Him in actions.

What does that mean practically for us this year? We are still deciding.  The boys will each get two small toy gifts from us, and some clothes that they need, and some candy- as that is always gone really quick. The Husband and I have been paired down for a while, getting each other a book, a watch, or some small token of our love and appreciation. As a family we are going to set aside an amount of money to give. The boys will have a specific amount of cash that they get to give and they can decide where they want it to go- more than what their own toys are worth, an amount that they will feel thrilled to give away.

In the past we have just had the boys go through their toys and clear out for a new invasion of stuff. That is good to do, but I also want them to know others are just as valued as they are and should not only get their used items. We've also given to different charities, but mainly that was something The Husband and I did, and the boys didn't get to be that involved. I want to change that.

All around the world there is need, even locally if you choose to see it. I challenge you to pray about what you are to do this year. That you wouldn't just buy stuff because that is what you have always done, but that you would seek God's heart in your giving. It is still always important to give tokens of love to our families, and some of you may have family members in great need.Maybe you are to welcome others into your home who are depressed or without family for your special meals, or just to be with your family. There are so many options, many that don't cost any extra if this is a difficult season for you. No matter what there is always something you can do. Just do what God is telling you in this season, if you ask Him, He'll tell you.

There are many great organisations, here are some that I love. If you have a favourite, post it in the comments section and I'll add it in as well.

Living Water International- Providing Clean Water for Communities Worldwide
World Vision- Give a gift. Change a Life.
Compassion International

What have you done in your family in order to simplify your gift giving? As a child do you have a favourite memory of when Christmas was more than about the gifts? Has God been speaking to you about this lately?

Celebrations for Three Kings Day

IMG_1150

Today is Three Kings Day (or Epiphany) ! It is traditionally Spain's day to give and get Christmas presents.

Weeks before today children send their letters to the three kings filled with lists of toys that they'd like to receive. Then the night before the big day every village has its own parade with the magi on a float for the kids to see and if you are willing to wait in the line at the end you can even meet them! The town where I grew up usually provided hot chocolate and Migas to keep the onlookers warm, and probably the dads bellies contented.

The children eat their Roscón de Reyes (a pastry with a hidden surprise for the lucky) and head to bed early, but not before setting their shoes by the door along with hay for the camels and food, wine and treats for the over-exhausted and long-traveling kings.

The next morning everyone awakes with hopes of finding what was on their lists. Naughty kids are rumored to receive coal in their shoes instead of candy- however there is a candy coal that is not only tasty but also leaves your teeth, lips and tongue a blue-black colour for hours after its consumption.

Now you know, maybe next year you too can celebrate the day that is remembered to be when the three kings came to worship the King of Kings. The boys got little betta fish from the kings this year and named them Prince Caspian and King Miraz- two dueling men in their beloved Chronicles of Narnia books. I also painted this little picture of the kings in watercolour for the boys, they eat that kind of thing up and I enjoy having a reason to create. We also watched  The Nativity Story, it is very powerful. I've watched it three times and have cried each of them.

The three kings traveled for a very long journey and  brought Christ: gold for the King of Kings, frankincense for the Priest of Preists, and myrrh for the sacrifice (of His own life) that He was to make.

This year I have decided to contemplate what gifts I can bring to the feet of my King. What do I need to give Him?  If you are willing, consider it too, something to bring to Him as an act of worship, today is the best day to do it.

Happy Three Kings Day!!

I’m Dreaming of a Green Christmas

http://www.growingagreenfamily.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/Im-Dreaming-of-a-Green-Christmas.jpgThere are so many things about Christmas that are fabulous, with spending time with the family, and eating good food at the top. However Christmas can be a very wasteful holiday- if we aren't keeping an eye out that is. What to do about that? I've got a book for you! I'm Dreaming of A Green Christmas has some very practical solutions to go and green up your Christmas. I'm Dreaming of A Green Christmas includes solutions for green holiday home decor, how to save energy, delightful new recipes, homemade craft ideas (to keep or to gift), pretty green wrapping options, and all the info you need to enable your own family to celebrate  a green Christmas in style not giving up any of the glam (unless you really do still like tinsel).

Green looks better, local/organic tastes better so it is all around the best choice. If you are a green fanatic already, or just need the ideas and tips to get you there,  I'm Dreaming of a Green Christmas is your book! There are so many ideas  that would work perfect year-round as well.

I love the VS. sections in this book, one of them being The Party Line On Cloth vs. Paper Napkins, you shouldn't have to think to hard to know that it would be greener to launder your napkins rather than throw them away. I really don't like cloth napkins, or I haven't in the past. I just didn't feel like they got my hands really wiped off at all. However it was because the napkin fabric used was more for decoration rather than to clean your hands. A stout cotton fabric would do the trick for sure. I am on a mission now to make myself some good napkins that we could use, maybe even with personalised embroidery for each family member (Lets see how ambitious I am feeling when I actually get to making them though!). I'll get back to you on that.

There is a recipe in I'm Dreaming of A Green Christmas that I just HAVE to share. I'll leave you with it:

Chai Hot Cocoa With Whipped Cream

For the Chai Hot Cocoa:
3 Cups Milk
1 Cup water
3 Tablespoons Cocoa Powder
2 Tablespoons Sugar (optional, sugar to taste)
2 Cinnamon Sticks
5 Cardamom Pods
1/2 teaspoon Ground Ginger
Pinch Cayenne Pepper
Pinch Ground Cloves
2 teaspoons Pure Vanilla Extract
4 Ounces of Bittersweet Chocolate

For The Whipped Cream:
2 Cups Heavy Cream
2 Tablespoons Sugar
1+1/2 teaspoons Pure Vanilla Extract

To Make The Chai Hot Cocoa:
1. Combine the milk, water, cocoa powder, sugar (if using), cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, ginger, cayenne, cloves, and vanilla in a large saucepan. Heat over medium heat until scalding. Remove from heat and let steep for 10 minutes, then strain into a bowl or pitcher.

2. Transfer the milk back to the sauce-pan and heat over medium-high heat to scalding. Add the chocolate and stir for 5 minutes, just until chocolate is melted.

3. Strain again and pour into 4 mugs. Top with a dollop of whipped cream.

To Make the Whipped Cream:
1. Place a mixing bowl and the beaters of an electric mixer in the refrigerator or freezer for at least 15 minutes.

2. Pour the cream, sugar, vanilla and salt into the chilled bowl and whip on high speed until soft peaks form.
