I don't remember my parents coming right out and explaining things, but I do recall being given a book to read. I can't remember how old I was, but that was my mothers method!

These books actually sound really helpful!

I'm so excited about these books! When I was expecting Julia, I scoured the library and bookstores for just the right kind of book to help explain things to Benjamin but never found it. The first one sounds like exactly the book I was looking for--it just hadn't been published yet!

As for "the talk," I just remember my mother gathering us together when I was about 6 or 7 and explaining something about chickens that pretty much went right over my head. My sister Holly says she got it, but I learned all the details from my cousin when I was 10 or 11. I'm guessing a lot of kids learn more from their friends (or the media) than from their parents, and that's sad (if not downright scary!).

I never had "the talk" and don't really plan on telling my kids (when I have them) in one big sit-down. this sounds pretty good! The only thing I wonder, is how do you then explain mommy and daddy's friends who are boys and live together? I found myself nodding in agreement when I read that excerpt, but then wonder if that means that you're basically saying that sex and marriage only happen between a man and woman. Then again, do you really need to explain gay rights to a three year old?

I guess I will figure it out when I have kids. :)

I'm like you, I kind of figured that I would address questions that my daughter had (she's three) when they came up. I figured that if sex is an ongoing conversation, then there wouldn't be any weird memories about "the talk." I watched an episode with Oprah about sex and talking to your girls about sex. It was really eye opening on how much we shield our children (especially girls) from sex.
