I am Going to Run. Hold Me to It!
Thinking about running again and about sore muscles. It has been a long time.
Life has calmed down a little, the boys are older, they sleep through most nights and I need to take time to do something I haven't done for 10 years: exercise. Yeah, that does sound bad, and it is bad to not be active at least for 30 minutes every day. In high school I ran like lions were chasing me, sometimes three times a day and it did pay off at state, but since then I was so burnt out on running that I swore (not literally) that I would rather do anything than go running.
The other day though, I was looking into the nike + ipod deal, where you can track your runs, your miles, your mph, time spent running, your highs and lows throughout your run and even the calories you burn! I am on my way today to pick up the nike+ ipod sports kit, which since we already have the ipod, will only be $29. I won't splurge for the nike + equipped shoes, especially since I have never really been a nike believer, but there are options as to how to attach the little sensor to regular shoes, via pouch, incisions, or duck tape.
I have decided to do this running thing, not race, not compete, just run. Just for me. Skinny people can be completely out of shape too, I think that is a huge misconception in our culture, and yes I am skinny and I know that I am horridly out of shape. This whole running thing is going to hurt, and because I have known that for 10 years, that is why I haven't done it.
Do you exercise? What is your favourite thing about exercising? what do you hate about it?

I am right there with you. I’ve been far too sporadic in my physical activity and it shows. I feel it and hate it. I long for that feeling of being fit and healthy! For the glow of activity on my cheeks! ANd I want to be a good example to my children in this day and age of couch potatoe syndrome. Best wishes on your plunge!

I go to the gym every other day (so I get Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday off). I spend an hour or more on the elliptical, doing abs, taking a step class, lifting weights.
It gives me so much energy and makes me feel so awake.
Go you for wanting to get back into it! I’m always up for some exercise!

I’m a walker (at a 12.5 to 13 minute/mile pace). The Hubster is a runner, but my knees and ankles don’t like running. Love the run/walk events where we can both participate. 2 weeks ago it was a 10k in Estacada (gorgeous route). This weekend we’re off to Victoria where he’s running the half marathon and I’m walking the 8k.
I use the bike and rowing machine at the gym when I can. I’ve been banned from the rowing machine since my back surgery in March, but I’ll be able to get back to that in a few more months. LOVE the rower!!

I think you will like running more now than you remember. It feeds my soul. I never intended it to be a “quiet time” but I can’t tell you how much I get out of my time alone. Can’t wait to see how it goes.

Bethany–join me for the 100 Mile Fitness Challenge. You’ll be working out AND be doing it with lots of other people. http://100milefitness.blogspot.com
Anyway, I hear ya. I struggled last night to run 3 miles (walked about half of it) and really really want to be able to run a 5K without stopping. I just got a Nike thingy and am trying it out. Need to calibrate it, but otherwise I like it so far. I do have the Nike shoes but need new ones. What do you recommend???
Oh, and my sister is the skinniest and most out of shape person in the world. I doubt you’re as out of shape as she is, but I think there is a lot of misconception about weight and fitness.

What I hate about exercise is the time. I like doing it! I just don’t have the time right now. I’m working a full time and a part time job, and if there is ANY TIME left in the day, it’s because that’s time that I should be sleeping.
When I do get back into exercise, I have some videos that I love! I don’t feel like I have more energy when I exercise, I just like knowing I’ve done it. :)
Alternatively, I absolutely love hiking, and would love to do that more!

I’m with Trish…well, the Trish right before me. ;-)
I like to exercise because then I feel like I’ve done something good for myself and I feel all accomplished and it’s nice, but trying to fit it into my already packed schedule keeps me from it most of the time. I wish I could get up in the morning and take a good walk before work (before I have time to talk myself out of it!), but when you have to be at work at 6:30 in the morning, that’s pretty killer. Maybe when my shift changes I’ll get back on the wagon.
Good luck with your running!

For the last 8 months, i have not exercised either… i walk sometimes, but that is not regular either! I hope you get to do it!
I will make sure, I restart walking, i am scared for myself!

I just started working out with a trainer this summer. I used to be a runner, now I think I’m more of an all round exerciser – I love lifting, which really surprised me. I totally agree on the skinny & out of shape thing. I wasn’t fat, and I used that, for a very long time, as an excuse for not being more in control of my fitness level.

I walk (have never been a runner). I love it because after the first couple of days, I look forwward to it. It’s me time away from work and away from the computer. I listen to books and head out into the neighborhood or onto the treadmill and there is nothing but me, my book, and my body. When I do weight training, I tend to listen to music, and it is still my time. Such a stress reliever and so good for you on a lot of levels.

I hate exercising mostly becuase I’m very lazy and exercising would mean loosing weight which I don’t want to, I need to find something that would keep me fit without really affecting my waist line :)
I am thinking of swimming.

I have just started exercising again – both my fiance and I fell off the wagon and we’re trying to get on again. To prove your point, both of us are very thin, but we know we’re unhealthy (and can feel it when we try to run). I hate it but I know it’s necessary and it will start to feel good instead of like torture after a while. Good luck to you!

I love to play team sports. It helps me to stay motivated going. If I am feeling lazy and I don’t feel like working out, I still go, because I don’t want to let my teammates down. I usually try and break the sports into different seasons, like softball is in the summer, volleyball is in the fall. That way I don’t get burnt out doing the same thing year round.

I exercise 5 times a week by power walking. I cannot run as I have RA and it’s too much on my joints but I like walking. Good luck with your plans!
Hey, I moved my blog. Come by and check it out if you have time. My domain name is a lot shorter too ;)
