Palolu & Hammock

IMG_4461

There are some things that are made to make you happy. Hammocks and Palolu (Licorice root in English) are two of those things. To just be able to hang there and suck on a sweet stick with the boys, is the perfect summer siesta time for me. Cuddled up and cozy, the hammock supporting every bit of our weight, and with the added joy of sweetness to satisfy my sweet tooth.

My mom sent the Palolu from Spain, I haven't been able to find it here. It tastes like very good and fresh black licorice, and no not the grocery store candy kind, way better. The boys share my delight in this tradition. I learned of Palolu and became enamored while growing up in Spain. It is also known there as Palodu or Palodulce, and grows by the river. We used to buy it along with other sugary delights at the local candy store. It was so fun to walk around with classmates in school all chewing on these yummy sticks.

  1. I remember hours at the community pool, lemonade stands, and reading book after book while holed up in a cozy corner of the public library.

I love the hammock pics. Even the “stick” looks good.

  2. what a great treat! I find that the simple things are the things that I remember most about childhood. My mom would always have us check the mountains in a distance when we started asking to go barefooted. If we could see snow on them then the answer was no. Oh for the joy of a snowless mountain!!!!
I have always loved the smell of just-cut-grass and the taste of sugary ice tea on a hot summer day!

    • That is such a cool memory. I love the simple things too, they are the ones that when you are doing them you don’t think they will create such a deep memory but then when the years pass you find that the little things are really those that you remember the most.

Thanks for sharing Sheri! You are in my prayers, blessings.

  3. Fun! My mom used to be able get licorice root when we were kids. I haven’t seen or tasted it in years.

    • YOu did!? in the US??? I need to find some here! I bought seeds but I haven’t planted them yet because they have to be sown right next to a river, and it takes 4 years to get any good roots. I don’t want to plant and not be around. I’ll just sit tight.

  4. First…I don’t know if I have ever told you how much I like your hair…it is beautiful!
I have just bought a Tea from Aveda that tastes of licorice…very sweet naturally.
I love to read…especially in the summer…sitting in lawn chairs under a tree with a good book…the very best!

  5. I grew up in Switzerland eating those delicious licorice roots.

Where can I find them in the US?

    Great Photos Bethany!

  6. great pics…quite a boho life in the hammock.

my favorite summer memories…flashlight tag, days at the beach, nights on the boardwalk, playing skeeball and mini golf.
