The Sunday Salon: On Why Authors (and Powell’s) are Causting Me a Mental Breakdown.

The Sunday Salon.com
The month of June is going to be just crazy. And that is because I am putting on one shower, going to two more, going to my sister-in-laws wedding, and being mother to the ring bearers in that, and trying to help with it, and and my husband is graduating from his master’s program and walking, and that is just in addition to all the regular life stuff.

Why would this chaos matter to me, a bookie? Well, because I looked at the calendar of events for Powell’s in Portland and this is a spectacular month for author events. Who will be there? Luis Alberto Urrea, Lisa See, Annie Barrows, David Sedaris, Carlos Ruiz Zafon, and Ali Sethi, among many, MANY others. Yes, all in one place, at the all mighty POWELL’S BOOKS but not at the same time! That is why a bookie like myself would feel almost panicky at the thought, and I am still forming my gray matter around the fact that I will miss most of them. I will need to choose very wisely which event/s I go to. I am for sure going to see Luis Alberto Urrea and I know I can’t see Ali Sethi or Carlos Ruiz Zafon because of wedding stuff, but still I am torn about the rest. And realistically, I will probably just be able to go up to Portland once. Powell’s really needs to help me out, maybe an Powell’s author event…something like the Festival of Books or BEA?? Come on Powell’s I know you can do it for me! For now, there are too many events, very little time. I will just have to cope.

What would you do? Do you have a local bookstore that causes you this much head debate? Is your June looking busy too?

  1. It would be a shame to miss those authors Bethany, I am the mother of 3 boys, now grown and know to well what this means….:D Today I miss them so much, they where so much fun growing up.

Congratulations to your husband and hope you can find the time to enjoy all which is in front of you.

I also read in one of your post that you will have more children…yea! with so much negative pub on having more than 2 this is refreshing, I tried for a girl the 3d time and well you know…

Happy memorial day to you and all the Bungeroos

  2. What gorgeous photos! I just came across your blog today and wanted to tell you that I think it is great!

  3. You have me wishing I lived out there! My local bookstore is a major chain and doesn’t host any author events. I wish I was out there! You are so lucky.

  4. Okay, I sympathize but I have to ask for the background on your blog name. I am a locked mama so pardon the totally off-topic question.

I work very strange hours now and I have limited transportation so life permanently altered my book reading/signing days. ((sigh))

I’ll affirm your sanity. I know it would drive me nuts knowing authors I’d love to meet would be so close.

  5. madeline-your comments are always so sweet and thoughtful. Thanks so much.

Yes, we are going to have more, I am not making the announcement yet thoguh, because there is not yet one to make, but sometime soon I will.

We think we will have at least two more, but God knows what he has for us.

Diane- Thank you! I am so glad you liked it, I have such fun putting it together and it makes my day when someone enjoys it. :P

Vasilly- Yes, I know I am so blessed to live here, that I do know! It would be fun if we all lived here woudln’t it? I’d love that.

Susan- The background? Well, just that I am dreadlocked and love it, and I thoguht it was a fun and original title- which could be remembered easily. Thanks for asking!

Yes, being so close but so far from the authors will be incredibly hard, but I am so excited for all the real life stuff I get to do this month too. We usually are not really busy at all so this month is crazy for us.

  6. Glad you’re planning to come to see Luis Alberto Urrea, because he’s the one I’m most interested in (well, David Sedaris too, but I don’t know if I’ll manage that one). Hope I’ll get his book read before he gets here!

  7. So how many book signings will you go to when you have 4 kids? And a fifth on the way.

Will you shoot photos for my book I’m writing? It’s a story about a family of 14 and opens with them driving across the country. We leave on Thursday. I’ll talk to Brad about it for you. Thanks.

  8. Ali- Yes, it sounds like it will be an excellent event, I can’t wait!

Mr. Matt of team Sabo- Oh, so now we are going to have 5 kids? I don’t know about that!

Yeah, I could fit in the trunk! ha.

  9. Wow…thats way to many good authors. David Sedaris…aahhh

  10. How far are you from Portland? I’m helplessly clueless about the goings on in Dallas, so this type of stuff doesn’t stress me out too much. But my reading in general has been really suffering lately and I don’t see June getting any better. Why can’t there be more time??!
